Testing iPhone XS with Three Mobile on London Street Art

We live in a world now where mobile phones are most of our lifelines and as such we expect a lot from the companies that produce them. Every year people wait impatiently for the latest spec upgrades from Samsung, Google, Huawei and of course Apple. People will happily queue for hours around the world wanting to be one of the first to get their hands on the new handset… And praying they won’t be that guy who dropped it within a minute of leaving the iPhone store.

The latest iPhone generation comes in the form of three handsets and has been moulded from the iPhone X spec, with the iPhone XS being created, alongside the iPhone XS Max for those who prefer a bigger model and the iPhone XR for those who want a more budget friendly phone along with being a smaller model. I was invited to take part in another Photowalk with Three Mobile to test out the camera function in East London, starting at Old Street and ending at Spitafields Market.

You may remember on the last Photowalk with Three I tested out the iPhone X and Samsung S9 Plus and shockingly for me the Samsung came out on top, so I was excited to see how I found the XS. Meeting at Old Street I was reunited with some familiar faces and was given a quick overview of the functionality of the XS before beginning our journey capturing photographs of the vivacious street art of Shoreditch. We had a lovely lunch at Bull in a China Shop where I had Starward Whiskey BBQ Sticky Wings with Triple Cooked Chips and whilst messy they were really tasty.

The portrait mode was a huge hit with the iPhone 8 Plus onwards and a small but impactful change has been made to that with the XS. When shooting in Portrait Mode, which blurs the background and sharpens the foreground, you are now able to adjust the level of blur on a photograph which affects the amount of light let into the shot. Not only does Portrait Mode work really well on it’s namesake but on food photographs as well, bringing your dish to the forefront and allowing you to decide just how much or little you want to blur the background.

I currently have an iPhone SE which is one of the oldest iPhone models still going, I’m literally mocked regularly by my own online account which tells me that my device is unknown. Like yes thanks I’m aware I’m carrying around a dinosaur, even more so when I switched between my handset and the XS to look at the camera capability and the improvement over the years is just so obvious and incredible to see. It was a sad moment when I gave back the XS and had to make do with my device, especially when I could see the vast difference of how the photos looked on my screen in comparison. It might sound like the simplest thing but if you’re in a phone shop take a moment to look through your camera and the camera of the XS and you will see the sheer difference.

I can’t dispute how incredible camera is on the phone but one thing that I still can’t get my head around is the loss of the home button. The screen size and full scope you get when taking is a picture is great don’t get me wrong but I got repeatedly frustrated with trying to swipe up to unlock the phone in just the right spot. I can’t fault the camera but I guess for me the real question is can I truly deal with the loss of the home button, will I get used it swiping up and get it right over time or will I have a hissy fit and feel like throwing my phone across the room in a rage. No you’re the dramatic one! I will say that I would definitely encourage all Apple fan girls to check out the new handsets, the camera really is a bloggers dream.

I was considering getting the Huawei because I read nice reviews about its camera but now I am confused because iPhone XS cam is also brilliant and pictures turned out very sharp and crisp. You did great job with photography.
