HSFW: Interview with Secret Treasures

Tonight’s interview is with Vintage lovers Shona and Sophie from Secret Treasures

How would you describe your brand

Secret Treasures produces vintage-style jewellery that’s classic, beautiful and timeless. Our treasures are all affordable and one-off.

What lead you to working with jewellery

We’ve always loved searching through hoards of antique jewellery and love visiting antique and vintage shops and markets. Some of the items can be quite expensive, so we wanted to recreate some of our favourites in our affordable range that has our own unique style to it.

Do you have a background in design

We both come from creative backgrounds; one is an actress and is regularly dressed in interesting and beautiful accessories, and the other has a keen interest photography and enjoys capturing the unusual and one-off. Although we don’t have a formal background in jewellery design, we did quite a bit of research online and in books and found that the best way to learn was just to get in there and do it. We’ve picked everything else up as we’ve gone along.

How long does it usually take you to construct a piece

It varies from piece to piece. We spend a lot of time searching for the right materials, and prefer to use small businesses as our sources. Then we usually sit together watching a chick flick while we’re working. Some of our smaller items take less than an hour, but something like our fascinators take a few hours as they are all hand sewn.

Who do you envision wearing your work

We make lots of items to order, so our customers tend to be people with their own style and ideas that we can bring to life.

What is your favourite item from your line
Since there are 2 of us, we’ve been cheeky and chosen 2 favourites! The first is our cameo necklace. It’s a classic design, it represents our style really well and, most of all, we love it! The cameo necklace was actually where it all started from – we found one at a vintage fair and began looking for ways to make them, then everything followed from there.
Our other favourite is the fascinator, particularly this midnight blue one. These are probably our most labour-intensive items and a lot of care goes into making them. We love how versatile they are and each one is completely unique.

Where do you find the inspiration for your work

Anything vintage! We mentioned shops and fairs before, but we’ve also both raided our Grans’ jewellery boxes and old photos for ideas. Our style features some Edwardian and Victorian-inspired pieces, but also comes from more recent eras. We find that there is a lot of chunky jewellery in the shops, so we bring a more feminine and delicate style.
What made you decide to branch out into knitwear and hair accessories

Basically we wanted to provide a whole package. Many of our items compliment one another, for example our brooches go really well with our knitwear, so you can style a whole outfit. My mum retired recently, and has rekindled her interest in knitting, so she provides the knitwear and we include the hair accessories in our jewellery making process.

Do you have any plans to expand your brand into any other areas

We’ve already begun work on a wedding range which will provide fascinators and other hair accessories, bridal jewellery and favours etc. We’re also adding to our range of gifts.

Where would you like to see your brand in 5 years

We’d love to have our own little boutique somewhere. We see it as a place where customers can pop in and discuss their ideas with us so we can provide exactly what they’re looking for. That way the customer becomes involved and feels part of the experience.

My favourite piece is the Scrabble Necklace, how cute are they. Secret Treasures has such a great range of vintage inspired jewellery and gifts that it did take me a while to choose a favourite, I would definitely recommend that you all check out their website, and you can talk to the lovely ladies themselves over on their Twitter page. Can’t wait to see their goodies up close at High Street Fashion Week, not long at all now 🙂
