On Sunday 22 June I will be taking part in Cancer Research’s Race For Life with a couple of the girls from my work, this is an issue that has affected all of our lives in a different way and we can’t wait to support such a great cause. We decided to run the 10k over a 5k, which for a bunch of girls who tend to avoid exercise and being healthy seems odd, because two of them lost a parent to cancer and this year is the 10 year anniversary for both of them, 10k for 10 years.
My personal reasons for taking part are because a number of people I love have had to deal with cancer. In March 2011, my friend Gemma lost a long battle with cancer at just 21, she was a fighter and tripled the time the doctors gave her to live but 18 months after being told she had 6 months left we lost her. We grew up together as she lived a few houses away from my Nan and its still insane to think that’s she not here anymore.
At the end of last year I found out not one, but two of my friends had been diagnosed with cancer and just to add to that, they both got the exact same one, Hodgkins Lymphoma. Ross, my old supervisor at work and friend, is currently going through chemotherapy in his bid to beat the big C. Now on a happier note, my friend Em, who I was actually lucky enough to meet through blogging, has just been told that she is 99.9% clear of cancer and is having her final sessions of chemo 🙂 This is not only amazing news because obviously I am beyond happy that she is okay, but it gives me the biggest hope that I will soon be hearing Ross say the same thing.
So wish me luck, and if you’d like to sponsor me and help raise money for Cancer Research you can use my personalised text code shown above. If you would like to choose how much to donate you can over on my fundraising page.
Have you taken part in Race For Life before, or are you doing it this year? Any tips on fundraising would be much appreciated 🙂
