The South Bank has been transformed into a Winter Festival and along the water front is the Rekorderlig Cider Lodge which you must plan a trip to before it closes on the 6th January. It’s as if a little German village has popped up in London, once you walk past the market stalls, the Christmas tree and all the twinkling Christmas lights you’ll find the lodge itself. Two storeys high with a well staffed bar inside serving ciders and other drinks you can stay inside at one of the many tables and chairs or sit outside around the fires.
On Friday I was invited by the Rekorderlig Press Office to attend the Cider Lodge to sample some of their delicious cider, including the seasonal Spiced Plum flavour which has returned for winter and can be had hot or cold. You also have the chance to be one of the first to try the three new flavours not yet released in their upcoming Botanicals range.
I am quite particular in what flavours I like when it comes to alcohol so I took my friend Claire with me who isn’t as fussy as me to get two different points of view on the new flavours. We decided to go with the classic two drinks per round but to get a classic flavour and a Botanicals flavour each time, and that we would share them to find out which ones were our favourites.
Our first round started with Passionfruit from the classic range and Rhubarb, Lemon and Mint from the Botanicals range. Claire really enjoyed the Rhubarb flavour whereas I wasn’t too sure on the after taste of it. The Passionfruit is actually my favourite flavour from the classic range but most of my friends say it’s too sweet for them.
Our next choices were Peach and Basil from the Botanical range and the seasonal cold Spiced Plum Cider. I was quite surprised to find that I likes the Spiced Plum as I’m not usually a big Plum fan and I was a massive fan of the Peach flavour. Claire liked the Peach but not as much as the Rhubarb flavour but she was really impressed with the Spiced Plum and was a bit gutted to find out it’s just a seasonal flavour.
The final flavour available from the Botanical range was Grapefruit and Rosemary which was a gorgeous bright pink colour, and we ordered a Mango and Raspberry alongside this which we didn’t actually realise Rekorderlig sold.
Now you can’t go for winter drinks without getting a Mulled drink and here you can get Mulled Spiced Plum. It had quite a unique rich cherry taste and was served in the cutest little mug, and the Botanical flavours were served in the fancy glasses you can see in my pictures. You pay £2 extra on the price and if you return them to the bar after you get your £2 back or you can keep them and keep them for the memory.
If you’re not one to drink on an empty stomach they’ve got you sorted as you can get everything from Mac cheese to pancakes to strawberries dipped in chocolate in the surrounding market stalls. Although it was quite busy on Friday it was not overflowing and there was a lot of room to sit or stand, and inside the lodge they were playing some cracking tunes so were more than happy to stand at one of the tables until some chairs became free.
We finished off our drinks by getting our favourite flavours from the Botanical range, mine being Peach and Basil and Claire going for the Rhubarb, Lemon and Mint. We would both definitely recommend going down if you get a chance, but remember that it closes on the 6th January. There were plenty of families there so don’t think this is just a trip for the adults, you can take in the rest of the Winter Festival whilst there but pop in for a cheeky taste of the upcoming flavours whilst visiting.
